Nawazzudin Siddiqui: From rags to riches

Nawazzudin Siddiqui in his recent tweet talked about how he is discriminated in the film industry for being dark skinned. Many actors came in support and agreed that the country has some weird fetish with fair skin tones.

People with dark skin tones are considered inadequate since childhood. Everyone wants to look like the women and men that appear in fair and lovely advertisements. For many actors Nawazzudin Siddiqui’s comment on the film industry came as no surprise, since that’s what preached. Our country is a land of racism and we cannot escape it. It’s just that we can spread some knowledge and change the mindset.

With much heated arguments about nepotism in Bollywood, Nawazzudin Siddiqui agrees to it. The star kids have an easy access to the entry gates of the Hindi cinema. The newcomers on the contrary have completed their prime time in struggling period only. Nawazzudin Siddiqui wants to help his children if they ever pursue acting as their profession.

But he also talks about how superstars are very important for the film industry. Because of them the film makers invest huge amount and the box office hits the numbers. Then the money made is utilised in other movie projects. If super stars become ‘extinct’, Hollywood would take over the Hindi Cinema, says Nawazzudin.

Nawazzudin Siddiqui has been standing strong in the film industry on his pillars of talent and determination. No actor can match what he does and from where he started to reach where he is.

But he isn’t the first actor to talk about such racism in the industry. Abhay Deol also started a campaign and asked celebrities to stop endorsing fairness cream brands. He called out Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor for the same.

The year started with biographies. Karan Johar and Rishi Kapoor recently unveiled their biographies in early 2017. Now it’s time for our Indian Drama King. Nawazzudin Siddiqui is all set for his biography “The Incredible Life of the Drama King of India”. In his biography he talks about his childhood, family and his struggle to mark his name in the industry. He also talks about how difficult it is to be a farmer’s child, living in a joint family and dreaming about entering the world of theatre. He also mentions that the major chunk of the book is about his parents and his village, without them he would have not been able to achieve so much. The book also talks about his life as a theatre artist which was beautiful and incredible in its own way.

With excellent non-commercial movies like Liars of the dice, Haraamkor, Firaaq and Lateef, he is a favourite among critics. Also with commercial movies like Badlapur, Kahaani, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Raees he is slowly and gradually making his mark. But the Gangs of Wasseypur actor says that he never thinks of movies as commercial or non commercial, the script is either good or bad.

His biography “The Incredible Life of the Drama King of India” is said to display on the shelves in Septmber.
